8. See the light.
Closets don’t always have the most glamorous of reputations. Many are more dark and dingy than fresh and fashionable…which brings us to our next point: include ample light! Lighting is of utmost importance for any type of decorating, but especially for closets. Not only is a bright room more appealing (and less depressing!), but it is also necessary to be able to determine various hues. We’ve all heard those horror stories of people leaving the house with one black shoe and one brown—don’t let this happen to you! Make sure you include enough illumination to be able to determine colors and objects.

7. Things are looking up.
Vertical space—maximize it! Even the biggest walk-in closet can fall victim to this fatal error. The minimum rod height for dresses is 63 inches. If you allow 45 inches for hanging pants and shirts, you’ll be able to fit in two rods in the 48 inches of space that we prescribed in our last post. Fully utilizing your vertical space will automatically maximize the amount of clothing your closet can comfortably hold, while also making sure that no piece of precious clothing ends up wrinkled. Putting high shelves above the things you frequently access is also a great space saver and clutter reducer. Items like travel bags that can be awkward to pack and are not everyday use items may be best stored out of the way, yet still accessible with the quick move of a chair.
