KID’S CLOSET TO PROMOTE LEARNING

I have a five year old son who goes a mile a minute – always on the go, coloring, playing with toys, and changing out of costumes and sports jerseys.  As a result, clothes were being left on chairs, shoes under the bed, and toys on the floor.  I finally realized that my child, like many adults, didn’t have an organizational system in place that he could learn to stick to.  Immediately, I analyzed and re-designed his closet space to create a streamlined system that promotes organization and fosters positive lifelong habits.

This same philosophy translates when I design my client’s children’s closets.  For example, to encourage independence in children, I make sure rods, shelves and hooks are at child-reaching heights for easy access to their daily items.  Additionally, to promote learning, I group their children’s clothing by color and have the kids get in the habit of putting back their clothes in the correct groups.  Design a plan that works, encourage your children to learn the plan, and have them stick to it.

Above are some images of twin toddlers’ closets I designed and styled in Newport Beach, California, and below are some of the specified items I used to get their closets in learning shape.

  • HANGERS – Hangers are an easy way to keep your child’s clothing organized and uniformed.   These strong, well-constructed wooden hangers feature a space-saving flat body, two carefully crafted notches for the option of hanging straps, and a polished chrome swivel hook. http://boutique.laclosetdesign.com/product_p/lacd075.htm
  • PULL DOWN RODS – The pull down rod is the perfect way to make those high hanging clothes easy to reach, and turn the upper most areas of your child’s closet into usable storage space.  This may even allow triple hanging if there is enough vertical space.
  • PULL OUT SHOE TRAY – Because children’s shoes are so small, they often get lost on deep shelves. This pull out shoe tray fully extends out and goes back in with a soft closing mechanism.  All shoes will now be visible for easy outfit changes.
  • LAUNDRY BASKET WITH LINERS – Divide and conquer!  Make your child’s closet usable and learnable.  Have two laundry liners – one for whites and one for darks - and have them start learning how to differentiate and identify colors.  Make it a fun game!
  • GLASS DRAWER ORGANIZERS – Keep your child’s undergarments, socks, and stockings organized and easy to find.  These glass dividers are easily adjustable to accommodate various sizes.  In the featured closets, the glass inserts were custom made by LA Closet Design.
